What you need
- A smartphone. An iPhone or an Android phone is fine.
- Earbuds or headphones. Then you hear the translation and other people do not. Wired or wireless both work.
- Internet. Use the church Wi-Fi if there is one, or your mobile data.
Step by step
- 01Find the QR code
Look for the square code on the screen at the front, at the door or in the notice sheet. Ask someone from the welcome team if you cannot find it.
- 02Scan the code
Open the camera on your phone and point it at the code. Tap the link that appears. A page opens in your browser.
- 03Choose your language
Tap your language, for example Українська, Polski, Română, Español or العربية.
- 04Put in your earbuds
Connect your earbuds or headphones. Turn the volume up or down on your phone.
- 05Listen and read
You hear a voice speaking in your language, a few seconds after the speaker. The text also appears on the screen.
Which languages can I choose?
The service can be translated into English, Norwegian, Ukrainian, Polish, Romanian, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Arabic and Dutch. Each church chooses which of these languages it offers. If your language is not in the list, please tell someone from the church. They may be able to add it if it is one of these languages.
Options on the screen
- Only read, do not listen. You can switch off the voice. Then you read the text in your language and hear the speaker in the room.
- See the original text. You can show the words of the speaker next to the translation. This helps if you are learning the language.
- Large text. There is a reading mode with big letters, which is easier for your eyes.
Tips for a good experience
Battery
Listening for one or two hours uses some battery. Charge your phone before you come. Turn down the screen brightness if you only listen. If you have a power bank, bring it.
Mobile data
The translation uses some mobile data, but not much. If the church has Wi-Fi, ask for the password at the door. Then you do not use your own data.
Keep the page open
Keep the browser page open while you listen. If the sound stops, check that your earbuds are still connected. If that does not help, reload the page and choose your language again.
Delay
The translation is a few seconds behind the speaker. This is normal. When people in the room laugh, you will laugh a moment later.
The app (optional)
Do you have an iPhone? There is also a ChurchTranslate app in the App Store. You do not need it: the browser works on every phone, including Android.
If something does not work
- The code does not open. Make sure your camera app is open, hold the phone still and a little further away. You can also ask for the link.
- I hear nothing. Check that your phone is not on silent, that the volume is up and that your earbuds are connected. Tap play again if needed.
- The page is slow or stops. Your internet may be weak. Try the church Wi-Fi, or switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data. Then reload the page.
- The voice is too fast or too soft for me. Switch off the voice and read the text instead, or use the large text mode.
Still stuck? Ask the welcome team or the person at the sound desk. They are happy to help, also during the service.
After the service
Would you like to read the sermon again, or share it with your family? You can ask to receive the transcript by e-mail in your language. Enter your e-mail address on the listening page. Your address is deleted after 30 days.
Please tell someone from the church how it went. Was the sound clear? Could you follow? Your answer helps the church to improve the translation for you and for others.
For people at the church
If you are on the welcome team, send this page to visitors before their first service, or show it on your phone at the door. Technicians and leaders can find the full setup in how to translate a church service and the checklist for the first translated service.
